As the province adds thousands of child care spaces under the Canada-Wide Learning Early and Child Care System, a significant shortage of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) within the province has continued to develop. To assist in filling the gap, the County of Hastings is pleased to announce a one-time Federal investment to support current and future students enrolled in the Early Childhood program at Loyalist College.
A $150,000 investment will be provided to create the Early Childhood Educator Scholarship, in partnership with Loyalist College. This scholarship will ultimately support the recruitment of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) within Hastings County by providing financial assistance to current and future in-class students enrolled in the Early Childhood program at Loyalist College. Eligible students must obtain employment at a licensed child care program within Hastings County after graduation.
Currently there are 29 licensed child care service providers with 68 locations in Hastings County, who are managing sizable waitlists. Hastings County Council recognizes that access to affordable, high-quality care is not only in the best interest for children, but also essential for parents and caregivers to be able to work or attend school.
Hastings County recognizes educators are essential in creating engaging and safe early learning environments which give children the best start in life. “Sustaining the existing Early Years and Child Care workforce while providing opportunities for expansion is critical to the system,” stated Warden Bob Mullin. “Early Childhood Educators play a critical role in the growth and development of our children. Providing opportunities for families to participate in the workforce and help children grow and thrive in supportive and inclusive environments is critical,” continued Mullin.
